Art quilting for beginners
Create an art quilt that could only be made by you
Maybe this feels familiar.
You love looking at art quilts.
In books. On Pinterest. At quilt shows. Online.
You see the colors, the movement, the freedom, the personal expression, and a part of you thinks:
“That is beautiful. But I could never make something like that.”
Maybe you are comfortable with traditional quilting. You can follow a pattern. You know how to sew pieces together. You understand fabric, seams and quilting.
But when there is no pattern to follow, everything suddenly feels much less clear.
Where do you begin?
How do you choose an idea?
What fabric should you use?
How do you turn a feeling, a photo or a memory into a quilt?
And how do you make sure it still looks like one whole piece instead of a random collection of fabric?
I know that feeling very well.
That mix of longing and doubt.
But here is what I have discovered:
Art quilting is not a mysterious talent that only “real artists” have.
It is something you can learn.
Just like you learned how to sew, piece, quilt and finish a traditional quilt.
You simply need a clear path.

From traditional quilting to art quilting
If you come from traditional quilting, you already have a strong foundation.
You know fabric.
You know stitches.
You know patience.
You know what it means to build something piece by piece.
But art quilting asks for a different kind of thinking.
Instead of following someone else’s pattern, you learn to make your own creative decisions.
Not all at once.
Not in a scary, overwhelming way.
But step by step.
In this course, I will guide you through the process of creating your first art quilt from your own idea.
You do not need to be able to draw.
You do not need an art degree.
You do not need to have a big, dramatic story.
You only need the desire to make something that feels personal and meaningful to you.
What you will learn
In Art quilting for beginners, you will learn how to go from a first idea to a finished art quilt.
You will learn how to find your own subject, choose a design direction, work with color and composition, choose techniques that fit your idea, and finish your quilt in a way that supports the piece.
From the very first lesson, you will start working on your own first art quilt.
Not someday.
Not after you have watched everything.
You begin right away, with small, doable steps.

What you will make
During this course, you will create your first small art quilt from your own idea.
It does not have to be big.
It does not have to be perfect.
It does not have to look like anyone else’s work.
The goal is to help you take the step from following patterns to making your own creative choices, with enough structure to keep you moving.
What you get
4 modules with 16 lessons
Weekly assignments that help you make steady progress
A step-by-step process from idea to finished art quilt
Guidance on idea, design, technique and finishing
A clear structure so you do not get stuck in too many options
The chance to work on your own first art quilt from lesson one
Access to the online quilt academy, where you can ask questions and share your work
Lifetime access, so you can return to the lessons whenever you need them

Module 1 - Bring your idea to life
You start at the beginning:
What do you want to make?
What do you want to express?
What kind of quilt feels exciting to you?
I will help you turn a vague idea into something more concrete.
Even if you think you are not creative enough.
Even if you have too many ideas.
Even if you have no idea where to start.
You will learn how to choose a subject, how to work from small to big, how to choose a technique that fits your idea, and how to add more meaning and depth to your quilt.
After this module, your idea will no longer be floating around somewhere in your head.
You will know what you want to make.
And you will be ready to bring it to life.

Module 2 - Design principles for art quilts
How do you create a composition that works, even if you cannot draw?
In this module, you will learn the basic design principles that help an art quilt feel balanced and intentional.
You will explore the difference between abstract and realistic art quilts.
You will learn more about color and color theory.
You will practice with composition, balance, shapes and visual focus.
And you will learn how to turn inspiration into your own design instead of copying someone else’s work.
After this module, you will start looking at the world differently.
Colors, lines, shadows, shapes, light, texture.
You will begin to see possibilities everywhere.
And you may discover that you already had much more creativity inside you than you thought.

Module 3 - Methods to create your art quilt
Now we move from idea and design into making.
Which materials can you use?
How can you use patchwork in an art quilt?
How can you work with applique?
How can you translate a photo into fabric?
What other techniques can help you create the effect you want?
I will show you different ways to build your art quilt, from applique and photo-based work to fabric manipulation, stitching, embroidery and quilting choices.
You do not have to use every technique.
The goal is not to make things complicated.
The goal is to understand your options, so you can choose what supports your quilt.
After this module, the question “but how do I actually make it?” will feel much less overwhelming.
You will see how your idea can become a real art quilt.

Module 4 - Finishing your art quilt
A beautiful quilt deserves a thoughtful finish.
And art quilts are often finished a little differently than traditional quilts.
In this module, you will learn different ways to finish the edges of your quilt. You will also learn how to decide whether your quilt needs a border, no border, or a different kind of finishing detail.
Then you will finish your quilt.
You hang it.
You step back.
And you think:
“I made this art quilt myself.”
This course is for you if...
This course is for you if you are a traditional quilter and you feel curious about art quilting, but you do not quite know how to make the step.
It is for you if you want to make a quilt that is more personal, more creative, more expressive, or more your own.
It is for you if you have ever thought:
“I would love to make an art quilt, but I do not know where to begin.”
It is for you if you are tired of only following patterns and want to discover what happens when you start making your own choices.
It is for you if you want clear guidance without losing your own creative voice.
You do not have to feel like an artist
Please do not wait until you feel “creative enough”.
That moment may never come before you start.
Confidence grows while you are making.
In this course, you do not have to come up with a perfect idea on day one. You do not have to make a masterpiece. You do not have to know exactly what your style is.
You only need to take the next small step.
That is how creativity becomes much less scary.
And much more fun.

“You are really encouraged to think differently. I learned that it is smarter to take smaller steps instead of one huge step at once. That helps me let go of my perfectionism, even though that is not always easy.”

You become more creative by creating.
Not by waiting.
This course gives you a clear path, so you do not have to figure it all out alone.
Instead of staying stuck in doubt, you will start making decisions.
Instead of only admiring other people’s art quilts, you will begin creating your own.

About Marlies

Hi, I am Marlies.
I am a quilt teacher from the Netherlands, and I am very enthusiastic about quilting, especially art quilting.
For many years, I have helped women learn quilting in a way that feels clear, practical and doable, with room for their own taste and creativity.
For a long time, I also held myself back.
I wanted to create more of my own art designs instead of only traditional quilts. But I often felt that what I made was not good enough.
By taking small steps anyway, I discovered that art quilting can be learned, just like traditional quilting.
I see this with my students again and again.
And what I love most is seeing how different every student’s work becomes.
Even when students start out nervous.
Even when they think it might be too difficult.
Even when they are afraid they are not creative enough.
Again and again, I see the same thing:
When you give yourself room to experiment, your own style starts to appear.
I would love to help you discover that too.
What students say
“I hope there will be a follow-up, because this works really well. You truly go through a learning process.”
Foekje
“Your explanation is incredibly inspiring.”
Gisela
“I joined because I wanted to learn to work more intuitively instead of always following a pattern. Usually I feel like it has to be right immediately. Now I am discovering more and more that you need time and space to learn, play and experiment.”
Gerda
